Welcome to my world!

I'm a wedding and portrait photographer based in Vancouver with a spirit for travel and adventure! I'm so blessed to do what I'm so passionate about and look forward to sharing it all with you.

I love to have fun with all my couples and capture the authenticity within. I like to play, try new things and create truly inspiring, emotional imagery! As you read through my history and peruse through the images, I hope you feel the energy and vitality that I feel when I'm looking through my lens.

Birthday Girl

So last week was my birthday (May 6 to be precise)… normally I’m posting about it by the end of the day but this year I waited a bit and decided to take it all in.  I LOVE my birthday.  Probably more than any human being should.  I just think it’s such a gift to be a part of this planet.  We’re given this amazing opportunity to experience anything we choose with a body, mind and soul built to such a heightened degree of sensory receptors that there isn’t anything we can’t do, see, feel, hear, taste etc etc.  And what a plethora of beauty, sensations and thought-provoking enigmas this planet provides for such sensory receptors.  It’s unlimitless!

It is to this effect that I want to experience as much out of this life as possible.  See all the wonders of the world, climb Mount Kiliminjaro, swim with the sharks (ooops… already done that…), love like there’s no tomorrow and witness every-day miracles (and those aren’t too hard to find!) just to name a very few.

What is even greater is how much one’s life impacts those around us, both directly and indirectly.  The words one utters, the actions one take, the decisions one makes affects so many other people around us.  I often wonder how, what I do in this moment and the decisions I make, will affect someone (or perhaps many) on the other side of the planet.  It is to this length that I do my very best to keep a smile on my face, laugh at EVERYTHING (including and especially myself), and project as much of a warm feeling as I can possibly muster on any given day.  It may not affect anyone on the other side of the planet….  But perhaps it’ll put a smile on someone else’s face that day.   If that’s what I can do as a result of being ‘here’, that’s all the reason I need to love my birthday!

BMO Vancouver Marathon

I did it! Pure elation!

I ran (and finished) the BMO Vancouver Marathon today!  What an AMAZING feeling that is to accomplish something so masochistic! I mean really…  4 months of daily training, long runs on Sundays in the driving rain, thick snowfall, hail!, blowing wind and sub-zero temperatures JUST so one can run 42 gruelling kilometres?  For what?!

The reason lies deep within one’s core - it’s a true testament of life in general and how you approach it.  How much is one willing to sacrifice to accomplish something that only a small percentage of the population has achieved?  But it’s even more than that.  It’s about perserverence, setting goals, stamina, patience, trusting one’s self (big one) and knowing one can do ANYTHING when one puts one’s mind to it.  All of these can be placed neatly in front of ALL of life’s situations: work, relationships, you name it.  If you want something badly enough, and are willing to work extra hard, there will come a time when all that’s left is keeping an easy, steady pace and knowing that all the training has prepared you for this ‘big event’.

It definitely has given me more strength, fortitude and the desire to achieve more, not only in my personal and professional life, but to offer that strength and fortitude to others.  Also worth mentioning is how much this process has given me a greater trust in myself.  Knowing I have what it takes to get through anything is so liberating!

As elated as I am, however, my quads and glutes aren’t so happy.  They’re wondering ‘what the hell just happened?!’  But they did a great job and carried me the last 5km at a much faster pace than I normally run.  As soon as the finish line was in site, they picked it up even more and had me SPRINTING to the finish line!  It was incredible!

I have to say though…  I started the day out kinda shaky.  First of all, I slept through my alarm!  I woke up with a start and when I saw bright light shining through my window.  I panicked!  It was almost 6:45am (race started at 7:30) and I had to drive all the way from Richmond into town.  I threw on my clothes, quickly made a hot, steaming bowl of oatmeal, grabbed all my gear and ran out the door!  I ate my oatmeal (from the bowl) as I raced down Granville.  It was a comedy of errors. But it all ended well…

WOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

These were taken by a friend at the 36km mark:

You’d be making faces at this point too…

Tofino

This past weekend I made a spur-of-the-moment trip to Tofino.  I have NEVER been before but have heard so much about it that when the opportunity came up, I grabbed it!  As we were driving up, we were discussing the world-reknowned surf and how much of an institution it is for the surfers on the Northwest Coast.

* A little background *

I’m from the Bahamas and I’m a self-proclaimed warm-weather, warm-water, anything-colder-than-80-degrees-is-not-acceptable kind of person.  Needless to say, I don’t step into any body of water in which I can’t see the bottom or causes goose bumps and instant heart failure upon entry.

* Story continued… *

However, it occurred to me on the long, windy, breathtakingly beautiful drive up the coast that I can’t go to Tofino and NOT experience this right of passage.   So I sucked it up, struggled valiantly into the tight-fitting, head-to-toe wet suit, waded into the frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean facing China and endured the initial inevitable splash of salt water on my face.  The seven-foot swells were continuous so trying to paddle out towards the break was an exercise in futility.  By the time I made it out far enough I had already been thrashed around like a crash test dummy and barely had the energy to turn the board towards land.  After several attempts I was able to get half of me upright and cruise on a wave towards shore.  EUPHORIA!

At that point, I figured I had accomplished what I had set out to do and immediately began walking back up the beach, stripping down to my bikini and jumping into the warm, welcoming, soothing and decadent waters of the ocean-side hot tub!  A glass of red wine and some amazing company was the finishing touch.  Now THAT’S what it’s all about!   Will I ever surf the shores of Tofino again?  With an ending like that, it’s entirely possible…

Catching up

My, how time flies when one is having fun!  I can’t believe it has been a month since the last time I ventured into the virtual world of personal history.  But there it is, in black and white, the last date I posted.

Marathon training has been going VERY well!  No major injuries (or minor, for that matter).  Two Sundays ago I ran 32km in the driving wind and rain only to get a chill and end up with a nasty cough and squeaky voice.  I still have it!  Now I’m on the downward spiral in my training in order to ‘rest up’ for the actual race on May 3 (gulp) – only 2 weeks (minus 2 days) to go!  I’m very interested to see what becomes of me that day….

Hockey playoffs also have my attention at this time.  It’s pretty amazing what signing up for a Hockey Pool can do for one’s sporting enthusiasm.    Not that I never watched the sport before, but my pure, unadulterated love for the game of hockey had been put into ‘receivership’ at the height of the strike several years back and it has taken me this long to recover.   It has been a slow process to say the least…

At the same time, I also have my Ducati motorcycle back on the road!  Oh what a feeling!  Although it’s still too chilly early in the morning, afternoon rides have been phenomenal!  So far I’ve ridden along the windy lower roads of West Van to Horseshoe Bay and back over to Deep Cove as well as into Steveston.  The longer rides will have to wait when the weather is much warmer.

I’ve also made a point of getting out of my ‘personal confines’ and exploring beyond the boundaries I’ve inadvertently set up for myself as a result of patterned beliefs and the notion of having to keep ‘doing’ for the sake of ‘doing’.  Simply put, I’ve taken some “me” time to do the things I didn’t think I had time for.  I’m meeting new people.  What a concept!  Socializing beyond the scope of work.  Killer!

All that being said, business is still pretty steady and building up rapidly for the warm days of summer ahead.  I have so many images to post and I’m so far behind in posting them… BUT… I’ve also been working on another surprise (and man, has it taken a lot of time!)… this I’ll save for later…  ;-p

Sensuality - the boudoir sessions continue

It’s only been several weeks and I can’t believe the continued response and rippling effect of this amazing genre of photography!  Women LOVE it!  I LOVE it!  I love seeing women get in touch, not only with their own sensuality, but owning their own inner beauty.   Every woman who has walked into my studio has come out excited, exuberant and feeling so good about themselves.  I know I keep saying this but I can’t tell you how happy this makes me to see other women so accepting and loving of themselves!

After seeing pictures of their friends, a lot of women are contacting me to get the same type of shots of themselves.  However, I’m now completely booked until the end of May.  Here’s a few images from the past few weeks:

This one has a bit more of a “fashion” edge… for those women who are a little ’shy-er’ I always start out with more editorial or fashion before getting to the more intimate apparel.

I’d like to invite all my girls to give me a call and set up an appointment.  For more information, please email me at tina@tina-graham.com.  I have a waiting list and spots do become available quite frequently!  I’ve photographed women of all shapes, sizes and ages ranging from 19 to 45.  We’re all beautiful!  Let the light shine!

Marathon Training - 7 weeks to go!

I had the flu and I’m already 2 weeks behind in my training.  While all my peers were running 32km this past Sunday, I was only up to 30km.  Although a difference of 2km at this point, it really does make a difference (to me anyway).

All in all, however, my 30k run this past weekend went quite well.  My knees held up, my muscles weren’t any more sore than my last long run.  BUT my hips were VERY ANGRY.  That’s the best way I can describe that kind of “pain”.

A ‘running acquaintance’ told me a good thing for my muscles after a long run is soaking my legs in ice cold water to reduce the swelling and strain.  Just the prospect of that alone made me shiver but actually trying to do it took not only my breathe away but took every ounce of rational thought out of my head.  After 2 seconds of submersion I was out of that water like a rocket and filling the tub with hot, sudsy, bubble bath water.  That may not have been a good thing for my muscles but it was a heck of a lot more soothing!!!

Next week is another 30k run, the week after that is finally my last, longest run of 32km and then it goes back down to 23k… just in time for the marathon… aaaarrgghhh….  I hope I’ll be ready….. (gulp).

Vincci & Ben - Engagement

This winter has made it very difficult to photograph outside in temperatures and conditions that are anywhere close to being comfortable.  Vincci and Ben have waited patiently for the cold weather to subside but I think we all agreed it wasn’t going to let up anytime soon - especially in time for their wedding next month.  So, we braved the sub-zero climate along the water’s edge in Port Moody and the park where Ben proposed over a year ago (at Christmas time).

Trying to stay warm…  at least there was no snow at this point.  We missed it by a day!

What a cute couple!

Flu Season

Well, here I go again!  I’m around so many people that I’ve caught yet another cold.  This one had me reeling!  I missed out on a few runs and haven’t been able to get back to all my fabulous clients and couples so I apologize profusely to everyone who has tried to reach me this weekend.  Although, today I was able to catch up on all my emails and calls and have been quite productive.  I even had a chance to catch up some extra editing of my most recent images.

Thank you to all my clients for the well-wishes and for making me laugh!

Marathon Training - Week 7

I’ve learned a lot in the past few weeks…

1)  I’m doing way too much!  I no longer do the intense Bikram’s yoga before and after the long run on Sunday.  I still like to do it “on occasion”.   But certainly not any time close to the long run.  That’s just insane!  I still go to the gym first thing in the morning for strength training and do my shorter runs (8km -10km) and/or hill training every night.  Which brings me to;

2) I actually CAN run up to 29km (at this point)!  I’m always a bit skeptical before starting off for my long run on Sundays.  I get nervous thinking I’m going to end up on the side of the road clinging to a lamp post for support waiting for someone to rescue me.  Fortunately, this hasn’t been the case!  My coach has been absolutely INCREDIBLE with all the support along the way.  He always stops at certain check points to make sure I’m still moving, eating my gels, drinking my water… then he runs the last few km’s with me until he’s sure I’ve reached the finish line.  Gerry you ROCK!

3) Carbs, carbs, carbs!  Anyone who knows me, now would be a good time to sit down…  I do my very best to stay away from unnecessary carbs.  I’ve actually given up chocolate (yes, you read this correctly!), coffee and anything else that contains simple sugar.  Bread, rice and pasta I’ve stayed away from for a while now.  HOWEVER…  it has become VERY evident the last little while that carbs are an absolute necessity!  WOW!  I’ve been gorging on bagels, organic oatmeal and brown rice and my performance has gone up exponentially.  My obsession with a non-carb lifestyle has gone out the window.  For those who know me, you can pick yourself off the floor now.

… and it keeps building!

I’m just starting to catch up with all the boudoir images I’ve been taking over the past few weeks!  The past few days I’ve had some time to myself and now I have this week to get ready for the next wave as I’m completely booked until the end of April!  I have a whole bunch of other things planned for all my girls who would like to come in for a personal session as well as little ‘goodies’ to take home afterwards.  Here’s a little sneak peak at one of my recent shoots.

I still can’t get over how much FUN this is, not only for me, but for all my girls who have come in for a shoot!  Obviously there’s always that initial ’shyness’ but once we start snapping, all inhibitions are let go and we have a great time.  Here’s a little note one of my girls sent me the other day:

Tina,

I just can’t thank you enough for the warmth, professionalism and amazing results you were able to capture last week!  I am not only in awe with the way you made me look, but how comfortable you made me feel in front of your camera!  I’m just amazed by that!   You are so totally cool, relaxed, FUN and so easy to work with that I’m going to send ALL my friends to you just for that experience alone!  The images (which I still can’t believe are of me) are more beautiful than I ever thought possible but still secondary to the feeling of confidence and self-assuredness you gave me.   WOW!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, thank YOU!
